John Newman Elected Commander of Hamilton AmVets
Alston Throws One-Hitter!
Herman Teckman was identified, in last month's newsletter, as the man who served as Darrtown's barber "for many years."

Darrtown resident, John Newman, was recently elected Commander of the Hamilton Amvets Post 1983.
But, on August 31, 1920, it was Smokey's uncle, Stanley "Doc" Alston who faced 28 batters and shut down 27 of them. See more about the game, including the box score at One-Hit Game For Alston.
Tenure of Darrtown Barber Discovered
Since then, another news item was discovered and it reported that Mr. Teckman was the village barber for 40 years.

Joe Bufler Caps Gas Pocket in Creek; Produces Three-foot Flame
An 1892 newspaper article cited Joe Bufler of Darrtown as one who lit a flame to the gas bubbling from the waters of the

Four Mile Creek. According to the newspaper, the spot in the creek had been visited by "hundreds of people."

Some who hear about a fellow named Alston throwing a one-hit baseball game may think that it was Walter "Smokey" Alston who did the deed.

Former Residents Share Their Recollections
Recently, Marvin Russell and Roger Wiley, former Darrtown residents, each shared memories of life in the village.
The result of the Milford Township Fire Department annual summer carnival at Darrtown was reported in a 1972 newspaper item.
Research reveals that, in 1899, James Applebee of Darrtown carried the mail between the Darrtown and Oxford post offices.

AUGUST 2, 1901: Drilling for natural gas began on the John Wells Nichol farm, west of Darrtown.
AUGUST 6, 1949: Earl F. Huber bought the Hitching Post from Mrs. Pauline Wiley.
AUGUST 25, 1928: The Darrtown town hall collapsed
AUGUST 28, 2010: The Oxford Press announced that the Darrtown Methodist Church celebrated its Bicentennial year.

During the mid-1900s, a roadside rest area was located south of Darrtown.
Constructed and maintained by the state of Ohio, the park was located on the west side of State Route 177, immediately south of the Four Mile creek.

The following article appeared in the Hamilton Evening Journal, August 8, 1924 - page 20. “A request of the property owners of Darrtown for the oiling of the road through the village was presented to the board of county commissioners Friday by Frank Kinch, county commissioner. Fear that all such requests from the county could not be complied with, the board refused to grant this application.”
