November 16, 2011: "Dale Bufler introduced the idea of recreating the military service sign that stood in the town square during WWII and he presented a photograph of what the structure looked like. Discussion ensued."
August 23, 2013: "Dale shared some drawings of possible veterans' memorial. Joe made copies that he and Jack will use when requesting funds from the
potential donors..."
Dale Bufler deserves credit for his creativity and his persistence in urging the Bicentennial Steering Committee to create a monument in Darrtown's village square, as a tribute to military veterans from Darrtown and vicinity.
Below are copies of the sketches that Dale Bufler shared with the Bicentennial Steering Committee.
Monument Sketches
Notice the similarity between Dale's eighth, and final, sketch (immediately above) and the final design of the veterans' monument (right).
Dale recommended that the committee adopt the diamond shape because it mirrors the shape of the Alston monument that stands in the southwest quadrant of the village square.

The following excerpts, from the minutes of two Steering Committee meetings, confirm that Dale first introduced the Steering Committee to his vision in November of 2011. Approximately 21 months later, Dale sharpened the focus of the group, by offering some options - in the form of sketches (reproduced below).
The inscription on the monument reads...
"On this site, as in the hearts of the people for whom they saved the nation, the memory of our veterans is enshrined forever."
Dale Bufler suggested the wording on the Darrtown monument, which he adapted from the inscription that appears on the Lincoln Memorial.
