It was 1931 and the earth moved ... for folks in Darrtown, across Ohio and two neighboring states.

The newspaper item that reported the unsettling event also mentioned that Darrtown resident, Belle Miller, was a news correspondent for the Dayton Daily News - a fact that has not been previously disclosed at this website.

No doubt, Darrtown baseball fans were excited when the news broke that the St. Louis Cardinals were giving Walter "Smokey" Alston a chance at the "big show." It was September and the race to the league championship was heating up. Alston, a star player for Darrtown High School and several minor league teams, was finally getting a shot at making the team, at the top level. See: Alston to report to Cardinals

Robert Zimmerman's injury in the 1898 Spanish-American War has been previously noted on this website. A newly-found news item reported that prior to his return home in Darrtown, he was hospitalized in a Providence, R. I. hospital.

Vet Hospitalized in Rhode Island

School Books Sold at Wyckoff's Grocery in Darrtown

A 1933 news item reported that school books for the new school year were available at Wyckoff's grocery.

Wyckoff's Grocery became Glardon's Grocery, which became Don's Carry-Out.

Collinsville Railroad Depot and Site Saved

It was 1930 and the Pennsylvania Railroad had closed the railroad depot at Collinsville. A representative group of citizens, led by Mr. L.A. Miller of Darrtown, appeared before the Ohio State Utilities Commission to argue that the Collinsville community had the right to retain the depot and the land on which it stood.

SEPTEMBER 10, 2011: Approximately two-dozen people gathered at the Hitching Post to discuss the idea of conducting a Darrtown Bicentennial in 2014.

SEPTEMBER 21, 1931: Earthquake rattles Darrtown and the tri-state area.

SEPTEMBER 22, 1877: Hannah Zimmerman assumed ownership of the Hitching Post (when link opens, see "Record of Ownership.")
