A CHRONOLOGY of the life and times of Jacob and "Nettie" Gaiser ... and their descendants

OVERVIEW OF THE GAISER FAMILY BRANCH OF THE DARRTOWN FAMILY TREE

RESIDENCE IN WAYNE TOWNSHIP: Both Jacob Gaiser and Antoinette Jarrett grew up in Wayne Township, Butler County, Ohio. A May 17, 1898 newspaper item reported that they were married on the previous Wednesday (May 11th) and the news item also mentioned that Jacob was from Trenton, Ohio and Nettie was from Jacksonburg, Ohio. The two villages are about seven miles apart.

The 1910 Federal Census reported that Jacob (age 46) and Nettie (age 38) were living in Wayne Township, along with their son, LeRoy (age 10 years), daughter, Mable (age 9 years), son, Lawrence (age 7 years) and Jacob’s father, John Gaiser, age 78.

RESIDENCE IN MILFORD TOWNSHIP: A January 6, 1916 news item reported the death of Jacob’s father, John Gaiser, and stated that John left “one son, Jacob, of Darrtown, with whom he made his home.”  The 1916 newspaper also reported that John Gaiser was buried in the Darrtown cemetery.

The newspaper quotation above establishes that the Jacob Gaiser family moved from Wayne Township to Milford Township sometime between the census-taking of 1910 and John Gaiser's death in 1916. The "Chronology" section below includes two Milford Township maps (dated 1914 and 1925) that identify two Section 20 land parcels situated on the south side of Harris Road, that bear the Gaiser name.

EVENTS IN THE LIVES OF JACOB AND ANTOINETTE "NETTIE" GAISER:

► Nettie’s father, Henry Jarrett died March 23, 1917, at the Hamilton residence of Nettie’s sister, Mrs. Walter Vinnage. Henry’s obituary stated that Mrs. Jarrett (Nettie’s mother) passed away two years ago (1915). The obituary also names Nettie’s siblings.

► Three 1920 census reports include info about the Jacob Gaiser family of Darrtown, including an address of “Richmond Pike,” which refers to the Hamilton-Richmond Pike; aka, Darrtown Pike.

► A 1924 news item reports that Mable Gaiser, daughter of Jacob and Nettie, was a teacher in the Reily school, which was located in Reily Township, Butler County, Ohio.

► In 1926, Emma (Jarrett) Vinnage, one of Nettie’s sisters died. Mable Gaiser, daughter of Jacob and Nettie, became a teacher in Osborn, Ohio. Two years later, Mable Gaiser married George Zettler of Osborn, Ohio.

► A September 1929 news item reported that Jacob and LeRoy Gaiser purchased farm land from the Kramer heirs that was located on the west side of Darrtown Pike. The 1930 Census Reports for Jacob, Nettie, and Lawrence Gaiser showed their residence to be located on Harris Road in Milford Township - so, perhaps, at the time when the census was taken, the Gaisers had not yet moved to the Darrtown Pike property.

► In 1933, Lawrence Gaiser, the youngest child of Jacob and Nettie, married Augusta Liebrich, daughter of Darrtown residents Peter and Myrtle Liebrich.

► In 1936, Frank Jarrett, brother of Nettie (Jarrett) Gaiser died. A news item reported that Frank had lived in Seven Mile, Ohio and his memorial service was held in Miltonville, Ohio.

► Jacob Gaiser died in 1937, at the age of 74 years. Antoinette "Nettie" (Jarret) Gaiser died in 1953, at the age of 75 years. Their son, Lawrence Gaiser died in 1994 and Lawrence's wife, Agusta (Liebrich) Gaiser died twelve year earlier, in 1982.

Although in failing health, death came suddenly, the result of a stroke of paralysis suffered Friday night, at 9:30 o'clock. Mr. Geiser, a life-long citizen of Butler County had reached the age of 74 years. Since early in life, he had been a member of the Lutheran Church and soon after moving to this place united with Saint Matthew English Lutheran Church. Mr. Gaiser was an exemplary citizen and will be greatly missed in the church and community activities. He is immediately survived by the widow, Mrs. Nettie (Jarrett) Gaiser; one daughter, Mrs. George Zeller, of Middletown; two sons, Leroy and Lawrence, of Darrtown; and one sister, Mrs. Maggie Klipher of Mount Healthy. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and at 2:30 o'clock in the Lutheran Church.” .... The following article appeared in the Journal News (Hamilton, Ohio), Friday, September 16, 1937, page 18. “Funeral services for Jacob Geiser were held Tuesday afternoon. At 2 o'clock, a brief service was held at the home, followed by services at 2:30 o'clock in the Saint Matthew Lutheran Church. Reverend Roger Imhoff spoke words of comfort and Mrs. Harry W. Teckman played favorite piano selections. Many beautiful floral offerings attested to the esteem of the deceased. Pallbearers were: William Jarrett and George Truster of Seven Mile, Walter W. Vinnedge, Harry Butterfield, Scott Engle, and Lee Wehr of Hamilton. The burial was made on the family lot in Darrtown cemetery. The services were largely attended and many called at the home during visiting hours.”

Jacob's will

The following article appeared in the Journal News (Hamilton, Ohio), September 16, 1937, page 5. Mrs. Nettie Gaiser, R. R. 2, Hamilton, widow of Jacob Gaiser, received a life interest in his 60-acre farm in Milford Township and full title to her choice of personal property through terms of his will filed in probate court, Wednesday. At her death, the three children receive equal shares in the farm. They are Leroy J Gaiser, R. R. 2, Hamilton; Mabel Gaiser, 408 McKinley St., Middletown; and Lawrence Gaiser, R. R. 2, Oxford. In addition, they receive equal portions of the remaining personal property. The testator signed the will on April 9, 1921 and named the widow executrix. He died September 4, 1937. The estate is valued at $7,600.

…is puzzling. Dwelling #28 is listed for Nettie and son, LeRoy Gaiser. Dwelling #29 is listed for Lawrence and Agusta Gaiser. Both dwellings are cited as being on the Oxford-Milford Township Line road (a heretofore, unknown location for the Gaiser family). It seems more likely that the census taker erred in recording the two addresses … and that Nettie and LeRoy lived on their Harris Road 60 acres and that Lawrence and Agusta lived on the Hamilton-Richmond Road 95 acres - purchased from the Kramers in 1929.  The two properties were located “around the corner” from each other and the census-taker may have visited the two families in succession - hence, the consecutive dwelling numbers.
