Brookfield Gard, M.D

Brookfield Gard has been granted "Darrtown Pioneer" status, as he appears to have been the first of his family to live in, or near, Darrtown.

If it is determined that Brookfield's first wife, Margaret, arrived in Darrtown at the same time as Brookfield, then she will be granted Darrtown pioneer status.

Brookfield Gard's connection to Darrtown was discovered during research related to the William Stevens family. The 1860 census report (see the "Details of the Research" section below) displays Brookfield's name immediately below the Stevens family. With his occupation listed as "Doctor," Brookfield Gard's name was added to the Darrtown Doctors page.

Genealogy records, official documents, and newspaper articles (cited below) helped verify that Brookfield Gard was born in Preble County, Ohio; attended Miami University (Oxford, Ohio); registered for military service during the Civil War; served as a physician in Darrtown, Ohio; and migrated to the Fort Wayne, Indiana area, where he died. If and when more information becomes available, it will be added.

DETAILS OF THE RESEARCH

ITEM 1:  As of November 2022, the 1850 U.S.Census is the earliest record found that documents the presence of Brookfield Gard - as the 17 year-old son of Joseph and Loda Gard. At the time, the Gards were living in Israel Township, Preble County, Ohio.

ITEMS 2 AND 3:  An 1854 college catalog verifies that Brookfield Gard was a student at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.

ITEM 4:  This is a record of the 1856 marriage license for Brookfield Gard and Margaret Tiffany - with the place designated as Butler County, Ohio.

ITEM 5 AND 6:  The two links at the right show the 1860 census as a typed version and a handwritten version, which has annotations. This census report confirms Brookfield Gard's residency in Darrtown and shows his occupation as "doctor."

ITEM 7:  This 1863 Civil War Draft Registration card confirms that Brookfield Gard registered for the Civil War draft. Note that his place of residence is listed as Preble County; perhaps Brookfield and his wife were living with his parents, prior to his entering military service, in 1864.

ITEM 8:  This is Brookfield Gard's 1864 Civil War Record of training for service with the Union forces at Camp Dennison.  Brookfield's enlistment rank is listed as "Hospl. Steward," which is defined at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Serving as a hospital steward seems consistent with Brookfield being a physician, before the war (per the 1860 census report above).

ITEM 9:  This 1880 census confirms that Brookfield Gard had taken residence in Fort Wayne, Indiana, along with his wife, two daughters, and one grandson. Again, his occupation is listed as "Doctor."

...presented in chronological order.

ITEM 10:  This 1900 census shows Brookfield Gard living in Fort Wayne, Indiana; however, he now has a second wife (Henryetta).  Their "years married" is reported as 13, which suggests that Brookfield's first marriage ended prior to 1883, by the death of his first wife or their divorce (more research needed).

ITEM 11:  This 1910 census validates Brookfield Gard's continued residence in Fort Wayne, Indiana and he is still listed as a doctor.

ITEM 12:  This 1913 death certificate shows that Brookfield Gard died on February 1, 1913. The certificate lists a more exact birthplace than that which was reported in the 1860 U.S. census report (above). The reported birthplace, Fairhaven, Ohio, is located in eastern Israel Township, Preble County. The village of Fairhaven is about 12 miles north of Darrtown, on State Rt. 177.

ITEM 13:  This 1913 lodge notice announced the funeral service for Brookfield Gard.

ITEM 13:  This link leads to an image of Brookfield Gard's headstone, which is located in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

ITEM 14:  The link at the right connects to an image of the Brookfield Gard family tree. To see a larger view of this descendant chart, at Ancestry.com, please contact the webmaster.
