a news item about Nell Davis - a widely-known member of the Darrtown community, during the middle of the last century, and a news correspondent for the Oxford Press.

The Butler County Farm Bureau recognized Nell Davis for her 25 years of service to the organization.

A link to the news article is available at the lower right. BEFORE reading the article, take a guess at this question...

"How many meetings did Nell Davis miss, during her 25 years with the Farm Bureau?"

Really? You think she could go 25 years without missing a single meeting? Sorry, zero is not correct.

Yep! Three Dog Night sang, "One is the loneliest number" ...but, in this case, it is also the correct number. Nell Davis missed one Farm Bureau meeting in 25 years! Truly remarkable.

A key part of the recognition was her attendance record during that one-fourth of a century.

First, an admission from the webmaster...

Webmaster admission

I goofed. Some time ago (okay, it's been about 13 years), ... I put aside some files ... with the intention of dealing with them in a day or so. Well, as you may know, time passes, files get misplaced, lost in the shuffle, and, ultimately overlooked. - So, ... I am embarrassed (hence, the reddish colored link) to admit, that is what happened with some Darrtown Gathering photos that Fay (Dees) O'Brien sent to me in October of 2009. ... That is the bad news; the good news is ... during the first week of February, 2022, I stumbled across Fay's photos. I have since added them to the website. I apologize to Fay ... and the rest of you who visit this website. --- Fred

the "Legacy" page in the Walter Alston section of this website, by adding information regarding a NEW BOOK about Smokey's managing career.

Walter Alston's autobiography, published in 1976, is titled "A Year at a Time."

The new book, published in 2021, is a biography that is titled: "Walter Alston - The Rise of a Manager from the Minors to the Baseball Hall of Fame."

The February 2021 publication, which focuses on Smokey's minor league managing career, was written by Alan H. Levy, a history professor at Slippery Rock University (Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania). Read about the book and the author at: Slippery Rock University

"The narrative that I'm contributing for readers is Alston's minor league background, which was virtually unknown," Levy said. "There was no hidden cache of letters or any heretofore hidden archive that I was able to unearth, but I researched some of the newspapers in minor-league towns to show how this man's career was built."

Levy's book may be purchased on Amazon and other online booksellers.

The first 26 pages (which includes Chapter 1) are available online at: Levy's book online.

Webmaster note: Chapter 1 describes Walter's life in Darrtown - before he entered professional baseball.
