Recently, it was discovered that a millinery business existed in Darrtown, in 1849.

Not really; however, distances must have seemed greater, when travel was limited to horse-drawn vehicles or primitive automobiles.
Thus, newspapers noted when people traveled as far as 20 miles to attend a funeral.

The following item appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer, October 20, 1913, page 12. The headline read: “DROVE 20 MILES TO ATTEND FUNERAL OF MRS. GEORGE W. BOWMAN OF DARRTOWN, OHIO” - - - The item read: “The funeral of Mrs. George W Bowman, 77, widow of George W. Bowman, of Darrtown, Ohio, took place yesterday from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Bufler of Darrtown. She had been a resident of Darrtown all her life and had a wide circle of acquaintances. Friends drove from a distance of over 20 miles to pay their respects to the family and attend the funeral, which is one of the largest ever held in that community. The interment took place at the Darrtown cemetery. She leaves a brother, John Yeakle, 75, and a nephew, Edward Pairan, an operator on the Associated Press.”

Several years ago, happenstance research revealed a 1923 news item, about a Red Cross campaign, that referred to a Stevens' grocery in Darrtown. Since then, that was the ONLY DOCUMENTED REFERENCE to the Stevens' business in Darrtown.
This month a 1922 news article was discovered that validates the report of a Stevens' grocery in Darrtown.

Now, something new is available, as a recently discovered 1885 news article adds another layer to the story. The author of the article reports on events and sentiments that occurred after Mr. Schneider was put to death for murdering his mother.

An 1896 newspaper article reported that a rural mail delivery system would be tested ... in MILFORD TOWNSHIP.
The test period was to last nine months (October 15, 1896 to June 30, 1897) and the three local men who were chosen as carriers are named in the article.

OCTOBER 15, 1896: Rural free delivery (RFD) of the U. S. mail began for Darrtown, Collinsville, and Somerville (the first RDF routes in Ohio).
OCTOBER 15, 2000: The Darrtown community dedicated the Walter Alston Memorial in the village square.
OCTOBER 17, 1920: Historic baseball game played on Darrtown field with professional pitchers throwing for the Darrtown and Hamilton teams.
OCTOBER 22, 1931: The Francis filling station opened for business near the center of Darrtown.
October 31, 2009: A Talawanda school bus tipped over and slid on its side, while avoiding a car in the wrong lane.
