Thus, newspapers noted when people traveled as far as 20 miles to attend a funeral.

BOWMAN OF DARRTOWN, OHIO” - - - The item read: “The funeral of Mrs. George W Bowman, 77, widow of George W. Bowman, of Darrtown, Ohio, took place yesterday from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Bufler of Darrtown. She had been a resident of Darrtown all her life and had a wide circle of acquaintances. Friends drove from a distance of over 20 miles to pay their respects to the family and attend the funeral, which is one of the largest ever held in that community. The interment took place at the Darrtown cemetery. She leaves a brother, John Yeakle, 75, and a nephew, Edward Pairan, an operator on the Associated Press.”
