EXPANDED... the Virgil Alston section - after discovering a 1973 Oxford Press news item

Upon Virgil's passing in 1973, Mr. Gilson Wright, a columnist for the Oxford (Ohio) Press wrote an article in which he remembered some of Virgil's accomplishments. Click following link to access Gilson's tribute to Virgil Alston.

Virgil Alston and Walter Alston were first cousins. Virgil Alston's father, Stanley, was a brother to Emmons Alston, who was the father of Walter.

A native of Darrtown, Virgil Alston became a premier runner for the Miami University track team in the early 1940s. Virgil served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war, Virgil capitalized on his natural talent for drawing and enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mention the name Alston to people who know Darrtown history and they are likely to first think of Walter Alston - the Darrtown boy who grew up to manage the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers and become a member of baseball's Hall of Fame.
