FAMILIES D-H: HERZOG ~ Samuel Herzog
Research suggests that Samuel Herzog was the first Herzog family member to live in the Darrtown vicinity. Thus, Samuel Herzog is the Darrtown Family Tree "pioneer" of his family.
BACKGROUND:
This Herzog page is another instance of discovering a new branch of the Darrtown Family Tree - by accident.
The Sam Herzog photo, at the left, surfaced in December of 2021, while the Ditman Family section of this website was being developed.
Subsequently, a review of records at Ancestry.com revealed that Sam Herzog married Josephine Bufler of Darrtown. That tidbit led to a phone call to Darrtown native, Dale Bufler.
Dale, a third cousin to Josephine (Bufler) Herzog, recalled that "Uncle Sammy" Herzog did indeed live in the Darrtown community back in the 1930s. Dale added that the Herzogs regularly attended the annual Bufler family reunions.
Records at Ancestry.com report the following:
> When Samuel Landes Herzog was born on November 8, 1852, in Longswamp, Pennsylvania, his father, John, was 26 and his mother, Cassiann, was 23.
> Samuel married Josephine Eleanor "Refinia" Bufler in 1892.
> They had two children during their marriage.
> Their older son, John Jacob Herzog, was born April 13, 1894.
> Their younger son, Ellis Samuel, was on April 17, 1897, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma.
> Samuel Herzog died on March 8, 1951, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, at the age of 98, and was buried there.
As explained further down this Herzog family page, Samuel Herzog worked for several years as a Superintendent of Indian schools in Oklahoma. Samuel had his family with him at the time and thus, his second son, Ellis Samuel Herzog, was born in the Sooner state.

LEFT: This copy of the handwritten 1900 census is included here to verify that the printed version of the 1900 census report (above) is correct. Neither record includes the older Herzog son, John Jacob Herzog, born April 13, 1894. Futhermore, his name does not appear in any of the subsequent census reports shown above.
These are typed summaries of the original, handwritten census reports.
INFO RELATED TO SAM HERZOG'S WORK AS A SUPERINTENDENT OF INDIAN SCHOOLS
The line report (immediately above) verifies that Sam Herzog was employed as a school superintendent of schools in August of 1892 for a salary of $1200.
The two pages shown at the right are dated 1899.
Page 723 is included here because it displays the heading of the report.
The bottom part of page 723 appears in the page 724 image.
Sam Herzog is listed as the Superintendent of two schools; the Osage and the Kaw boarding schools.
The following information comes from an 1892 federal report titled "Employees in Indian School Service."
BELOW: This collage shows a view of the Indian School at Pawhuska, Oklahoma - where Sam Herzog served as the School Superintendent.
The length of Mr. Herzog's service with the Indian schools is unknown. The 1900 federal census report (shown above) confirms that Sam was employed at the Osage Boarding School at the turn of the century.
The date of Sam's appointment is listed as August 12, 1892. Mr. and Mrs. Herzog's wedding license (above) reports that they were married in June of 1892. So, it seems that the newlyweds moved to Oklahoma shortly after their wedding.
In 1895, Sam Herzog filed a report on a school at Keams Canyon, Arizona.

Other pleasant affairs have been given for their entertainment, among which was the annual Bufler reunion held Saturday, a large percentage of the descendants being present. A duck dinner at noon was a fine treat and greatly enjoyed by the guests.
THE SAM HERZOG FAMILY RETURNS TO DARRTOWN
Records do not yet reveal when Sam Herzog left his position with the Indian schools of Oklahoma. However, as seen below, a Milford township map and several newspaper articles verify that the Herzogs had a presence in the Darrown community by, at least, 1914.
The following news items were found at Newspapers.com
The following 1914 Milford Twp. map places the Samuel Herzog farm northwest of Darrtown. The red arrow on the map suggests that the property was accessed from the Oxford-Trenton Road (or the Oxford-Collinsville Road, as listed on the 1930 census report above).
The house seen in the photo below is confirmed as the property of Samuel Herzog. The location of this house has not been determined. This image was found in the Ditman family files. See the Ditman / Connections page.

MR. & MRS. SAM HERZOG LEAVE DARRTOWN; MOVE TO ALABAMA
The May 14, 1931 edition of the Hamilton Evening Journal reported, in the article at the right, that the Herzogs of Darrtown were moving to Alabama and in the process this news item revealed the following, heretofore, unknowns...
> Sam Herzog taught in the Milford Twp. schools; served as the Darrtown Union Sunday School superintendent; and was a member of the Darrtown Lutheran church council.
> The Teckman Transportion company (of Darrtown) moved the Herzogs to Alabama.
We know John Jacob Herzog did not die in infancy. Click the following link to see John Jacob Herzog's record of military service. He was inducted in 1918, when he was about 24 years old.
RIGHT: This photo of Sam and Josephine Herzog was dated 1934. Presumably, the image was taken in Alabama, since the Herzogs moved to the "Cotton State," in 1931.
James Ditman, of Maryland, contributed the Herzog items that appear on this page.
