To promote interest in the Bicentennial ... and in the spirit of reliving some experiences from the 1950s and '60s, when Darrtown groups frequently rented buses to attend baseball games between the Cincinnati Reds and Walter Alston's Dodgers ... the Bicentennial Steering Committee authorized a "Darrtown Night" at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park.

In the Spring of 2013, a task force of three volunteers (Dale Bufler, Sandy Jolivette, and Bob Young) organized the September 6th event and began taking orders for tickets. To inform the public, tha poster at the right was displayed in prominent places and included in the Darrtown.com newsletter.

The task force hit a grand slam! The event sold out and when the bus headed toward Cincinnati, all 52 seats were filled.

Those who participated had great seats at the ball park, saw a good game (the Reds won 3-2), and enjoyed the unexpected appearance of a special group of former Reds players. Eight regulars from the "Big Red Machine" were present and on field at the end of the game. It was a fitting finish to a good night at the ball park!

During the bus trip home, Dale Bufler added to the fesivities by asking a series of Red's trivia questions and treating the winners with small tokens of victory.

ABOVE: A ticket to the game and one for the memory book!

LEFT: Just think! Without the Darrtown group the attendance would have been only 33,726.

RIGHT: Bob Young served as the official greeter to all who boarded the bus.

More images from the evening appear in the following slide show.

The Reds organization designated this game as "Joe Morgan Night" and, after the game, Joe and his teammates from the "Big Red Machine" appeared on the field. Images of the former players were shown on the big screen.
