...an 1883 newspaper article that told of Darrtown's H.D. Kyger entering a horse in a race at Dayton, Ohio. The race featured a $300 PRIZE to the winner.
How much would $300 in 1883 be worth in today's money?
Read more about H.D. Kyger, the horseman, at the Kyger family page.

Nope, too low.
Incorrect.
Yes, slightly more than $9,000 in prize money for a first-place finish.
Darrtown is 40 miles from Dayton. So, ... how, in the year 1883, did H.D. Kyger get his race horse to the race site?
Internet sources report that, during the 1800s, some race horses traveled in vans pulled by other horses and/or they rode in railroad cars. More detailed information about the transportation of horses in the 1800s, is available at the Practical Horseman website.

The railroad depot at Collinsville, some four miles east of the Kyger stables on Scott Road, may have been the point at which Mr. Kyger accessed a train car for transporting his entries to various race sites. Or, not. We may never know...

The Darrtown website "family" section has grown...again.
This new page provides info about the Scott family that lived in Milford Township in the early to mid-1800s.
Yes, the 14 parcels of Scott land totaled 1269 acres!
The number 1776 has a certain ring to it, but it is not the right answer.
1492 is a familar number. Something about 1492 and sailing the ocean blue. But, still, not correct.
Sorry, not correct. Maybe you were thinking of the number of home runs that George Ruth hit in his career.
See the map and read about this family at the Scott family page
An 1855 map shows that four members of the Scott family owned land in Milford Township. Guess how many total acres they owned:
AND THEN...
The Reeb family page is now available.
Michael Reeb ran a grocery out of a house two doors north of where Don's Carry-Out is located. See the Reeb family page.

The Covid-19 virus of this century was not the first time that a pandemic hit Darrtown (and the nation).
... a community health story from 1919.
Upon hearing the news, members of the Darrtown Board of Education acted promptly.

"Confession is good for the soul."
The September 2 newsletter asked if anyone could help identify a farmer named Jacob Stinger, who according to a news item lived "south of town."
Upon rereading the article, it became apparent that "south of town" meant south of Oxford ... not, south of Darrtown.
So, in the words of Emily Latella, "Oh! Well...that's different. Never mind!"
Confession is also good for... CORRECTING THE RECORD.
If you are unfamiliar with Emily, check her out on SNL.
THE ANSWER IS ... 62.
A. "What is the top speed permitted on Darrtown's main street?"
B. "What is the total number of pavers in the village square?"
D. What is the total number of lots originally platted in Darr's village?"
C. "What was Benno Reeb's age when he registered for the WWII draft?"
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING IS THE CORRECT QUESTION?
Take your best guess!
A, B, C, or D?
Nope; that would be waaay too fast.
Nope; that would be waaay too few.
Yesss, you got it! Benno Reeb, an accomplished baseball pitcher from Darrtown at the turn of the 20th century, was 62 years old when he registered for the World War II military draft, in 1942. Click the image of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (below) to see the rest of the story.
Nope, not even close. The total number of lots in Conrad Darr's original plat plan was ... 128.
