Benno (a.k.a. Ben) Reeb was, as the old saying goes, "a pretty fair country ball player" - as noted in various news items, some of which appear below. Around the turn of the 20th century, he pitched for several prominent baseball teams in and around Hamilton, Ohio.

These two links relate to the second 1861 entry above.

This link relates to the 1877 entry above.

The following Reeb family items were contributed by Joyce Junkin Cockerill, daughter of Harry Junkin and Betty (Reeb) Junkin and granddaughter of Benno Reeb.

Ben Reeb's baseball pitching prowess was so well known locally that, when his father (Micheal) died, the headline to the 1904 death notice (replicated at the right) read "Ben Reeb's father dead."

As reported in his obituary (see link below) Ben Reeb worked for the Mosler Safe Company of Hamilton, Ohio, for more than 50 years.

Webmaster Note: At first glance, the report of Benno registering for the military draft at age 62 seemed unlikely. HOWEVER, the two following items confirm that men were drafted up to age 65.

Information about the World War II Draft Registration of men - up to 65 years of age

“The first draft registration under the 1940 Selective Training and Service Act required all males ages 21-36 to register on October 16, 1940, to serve in what would ultimately be WWII. Between 1941 and 1943, there were five more registrations, and the ages changed to 18-44. One exception is the Fourth Registration, or "Old Man's Draft …”

The above information came from the WWII "draft registration page" at the fold3 website.

"In 1942, the Selective Service initiated a “Fourth Registration” of the draft. Unlike other drafts for World War II, however, this one targeted older men, not for military service, but for help on the home front. Known as the 'Old Man’s Draft' because it targeted men 45-64 years of age, the registration officially took place on April 27, 1942, at local draft boards around the country. It was intended to provide the government with a register of manpower, men who might be eligible for national service."

The above information came from "the 'old man's draft page' at the fold3 website.
