Origin of Shollenbarger Road?
In late September, 2023, Carole Gerber Harlan of Centerville, Ohio, emailed the following message to the Darrtown webmaster:
THE BLUE AND WHITE NUMERALS ABOVE DENOTE THE FOLLOWING INFO BELOW:
1 - The yellow line locates the village of Darrtown.
2 - The larger red rectangle locates land owned by “D. Shollenbarger.”
3 - The purple “29” indicates that the Shollenbarger land was located in Section 29 of Milford Township.
4 - The name highlighted in blue reads “D. Shollenbarger” – which denotes the property owner.
5 - The smaller red rectangle shows the numeral “193” which denotes the number of acres in this land parcel.
6 - The green rectangle denotes a symbol for a cemetery or church – and we know a church once stood in this area, and, of course, this is the location of the Darrtown cemetery.
7 - There is a small double-headed arrow that denotes that the Shollenbarger property included some land on the south side of what we now call Shollenbarger Road.
BOTTOM LINE: No official record has been found to document how Shollenbarger Road was named; however it seems logical to conclude that Shollenbarger Road was named for Daniel Shollenbarger.

Subject: Darrtown question
Hi Fred,
My husband and I took a quick trip down to Hamilton yesterday. We visited the Soldiers, Sailors, and Pioneers Monument and then drove through Darrtown. It was my first time there. I was wondering if you knew if Shollenbarger Road was named after my 3rd great grandfather, Daniel Shollenbarger.
Thanks for all the work you do on the Darrtown history. I really enjoy it.
Carole

Subject: Shollenbarger family
Hello, Fred,
Helen Shollenbarger Weiss, my late mother-in-law, was the great-granddaughter of Daniel Shollenbarger, so I have been quite invested in researching the family for many years.
Family lore is that the Rumple and Shollenbarger families came together to Butler County from Rowan County, North Carolina. Frederick Shollenbarger married Mary Slough in Rowan County 8 November 1799. They sold their land in Rowan County in 1815 and purchased Section 11, Ross Township, from Peter Wilcox on 27 Nov 1815 (Butler County Deed Book F, p. 144).
When Frederick died in August of 1831, his son, Daniel, was the administrator of the estate. Frederick's daughters, Sarah Keil and Mary Shaffer, were also living in Butler County. At the time of the settlement of the estate in 1833, Daniel's other siblings, Jacob, John, and Catherine, were living in Randolph County, Indiana (Butler County Deed Book V, page 453).
Daniel Shollenbarger married Elizabeth Smith on 9 April 1835 in Butler County and died in October 1868. The Shollenbargers are buried on the East Hill in Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton. Records indicate that the family may have relocated Daniel's grave there around the time Elizabeth died in 1881. Daniel's sister, Sophia, and her husband, John Keil, are also buried there. There is a memorial window in Darrtown's St. Matthew Lutheran Church in honor of Daniel and Elizabeth as one of the founding families of the church.
Daniel was a carpenter by trade and lived in Milford Township near the Oxford Township line on the Oxford-Trenton Road near where the north end of Shollenbarger Road intersects. Daniel and Elizabeth had eight children, most of whom remained in Butler County during their lifetimes. Their second son, David Smith Shollenbarger, owned the farm on Shollenbarger road across from the Darrtown Cemetery. Their fourth son, Jacob Henry Shollenbarger (Helen's grandfather), was a successful merchant and became the postmaster in Collinsville in later years.
Thanks for all you do to keep Darrtown's history alive.
Happy holidays!
