Joseph Roscoe McDade

1904-1983

Pauline (Wesley) McDade

1905-1986

Joe and Pauline McDade have been designated as Darrtown pioneers, because they became the first-known McDade family members to have lived in the Darrtown area, when, in 1965, they moved to the farm located at 2151 Scott Road, 1.5 miles east of Darrtown (the date of their arrival was determined from Pauline McDade's obituary).

The following four U.S. Federal Census reports for the years 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 provide a glimpse of Joseph Roscoe McDade' life - from the time he was a six years old boy, living in Crawford County, Illinois through the time when he was a 26 year-old married man - married to Pauline and living in Sullivan County, Indiana, and concluding with the time that he again lived in Crawford County, as a 36 year-old man.

The reports show that Joe's father was named Frank McDade, who was born in Indiana and his mother was named Permelia, who was, according to two of the reports, born in Texas.

We have no information about when Joe and Pauline moved to the Scott Road farm in Milford Township, Butler County, Ohio. However, from Pauline's obituary (referenced the opening paragraph, above), we can deduce that the the McDade family arrived in Darrtown in 1965 - when Joe was 62 and Pauline was 57.

Webmaster note: This 1930 Census report for "John" R McDade is included, because all the info listed for "John" is consistent with the info in other census reports for Joseph Roscoe McDade - except for the birthplace of his mother (Texas is listed in the 1910 report above and the Ancestry image - see "starred" rectangle below right).

These two images confirm that, on February 16, 1942, Joe McDade registered for the military draft, as required by U.S. law.

Webmaster note: There seems to be a discrepancy between the name of Joe's mother (Josephine Lynn) in his marriage record above and the name of his mother that is reported in the 1910 census (Permelia J.).

As seen in the image at the right (acquired from Ancestry.com) Joe's mother's name is confirmed as Permelia Josephine Lynn - with Lynn being her maiden name.

The image at the left shows a World War I military draft card for Joe McDade's father (Joseph Francis McDade).

Joseph Francis McDade wrote the name of his wife (Joe's mother) as "Permelia J. McDade."

In the Darrtown community, Joseph Roscoe McDade was affectionately known as "Pony Joe" - as his trips to Darrtown from the McDade farm on Scott Road were often made in a pony cart powered by one or two ponies.

An image of "Pony Joe" and his pony cart - with a young passenger - appears on the Snapshots 2 page.

"Pony Joe" also appears in a photo of several men visiting at Luther McVicker's garage on the Snapshots 3 page.

Don Beckett, long-time proprietor of Don's Carry-Out, in Darrtown, has shared some memories of "Pony Joe." See Don Beckett's Recollections.
