James A. Fowler was born in Maryland in 1787. As a child, he moved with his family to Kentucky.
Around 1808, he moved to Butler County, Ohio, where he married Elizabeth Devore. Eventually, the couple had eight children.
James served in the War of 1812.
In the 1830s, the Fowlers lived in Marion County, Indiana (Indianapolis is the county seat).
By the 1840s, the Fowlers returned to Butler County and settled in Darrtown. The GenealogyTrek website estimates that James, at one point, owned about 20 percent of the lots in the village (see the Fowler property diagram below).
GenealogyTrek also provides a more detailed "life sketch" of James A. Fowler.

"Hello Darrtown Webmaster,
During extensive research of family member James A. Fowler, I discovered his very strong link to Darrtown. It appears that in the 1840's he owned a very large portion of Darrtown.
Perhaps you may want to list him in your list of People with a link to my detailed Life Sketch of him. You'll also find other Fowler life sketches plus there are more coming as we continue to move our research to the website."

As noted in the Background section above, the GenealogyTrek website estimates that, in the 1840s, James A. Fowler owned "about 20 percent" of the lots in Darrtown.
Link #1 below shows a diagram of Darrtown with all 128 lots noted, along with the location of four historical sites; the Lutheran Church, the Methodist Church, the site of the former town hall; and the site of the former Darrtown High School.
Link #2 below shows a diagram of Darrtown with all 128 lots noted and orange rectangles on each of the 22 properties once owned by Mr. Fowler.
22 out of 128 lots does not compute to exactly 20 percent, but it is pretty darn close. We know of no one else who ever owned more.
