CLEMENTS: Property records confirm that Lot 76 was owned by postmaster James Clements. His daughter, Maria, married John Nichol. A newspaper item reported that the Nichol home on Lot 76 had served as a Darrtown post office. See: home of John and Maria Nichol.

BRINCEFIELD: Property records confirm that Lot 53 was owned by Wm. Brincefield and this was the only property that he owned in Darrtown - so, Lot 53 once was the site of the post office in the Brincefield home.

The best answer seems to be ... "several places."

DARRTOWN, OHIO

In its earliest days, the United States postal system commonly relied on post offices that were located in taverns, stores, and/or the homes of the persons who served as postmasters.

Consequently, during those early times, the location of a community's post office typically depended on who was serving as the postmaster.

In an attempt to identify the location of the Darrtown post office (or... post offices), the following process was implemented.

Click the following link to see a larger view of the list of Darrtown postmasters.

1. Darrtown postmasters were identified (see the official list, at right).

The following links connect to diagrams that SHOW THE LOCATIONS OF LOTS owned by Darrtown postmasters.

The links are listed chronologically; i.e. - matching the order in which that the postmasters served.

Red rectangles on the diagrams indicate where the properties were located.

CONFIRMATION OF DARRTOWN POST OFFICE LOCATIONS

BUFLER: Property records confirm that Joseph Bufler owned five properties in Darrtown. Lot 108 was the last parcel that Joseph acquired and it, to this day (August 2023), belongs to a Joseph Bufler descendant (i.e., Tom Bufler, Joseph's great-grandson).

For years, this Main Street property included Bufler's Jewelry and/or watchmaker shop.

It seems reasonable to conclude that the "shop" portion of the house on Lot 108 served as a Darrtown post office.

If one assumes that the Darrtown post offices were usually located along Main Street (for convenience to patrons), then... perhaps, the following lots may have served as Darrtown post offices:

Oakes - 44

McMechan - 4, 12, 20, 21, 52, 68.

Stevens - 5

Davis - 53, 61

Kendall - 4

2. The names of the postmasters were correlated with names that appear on Butler County (Ohio) property records (found at the Butler County Recorder's office).

3. The results of Steps 1 and 2 were compiled into a chart (below).

The following chart shows the correlation of POSTMASTER NAMES and the LOTS that the postmasters owned in Darrtown.

Several postmasters owned multple properties and in most instances, proof of exact post office location is lacking.

Only the Clements and the Brincefield post offices have been verified (see the confirmation section below the chart).
