John Frederick Schmidt

Using information gleaned from the newspaper account (displayed below), it appears that the Schmidt family of Darrtown originated with John Frederick Schmidt.

Schmidt, Frederick (1878 - 1964)

From his obituary, it seems that Frederick Schmidt, son of John Frederick Schmidt, was:

> Born in Waldensburg, Germany on October 8, 1878 to John Frederick Schmidt and Catherine (Jockel) Schmidt.

> Brought to Darrtown by his parents in 1882, at the age of four years.

> Educated in the schools of Darrtown.

> Married Louise C. Sprang on November 28, 1901

Schmidt, John Frederick (? - ?)

By gleaning information from the obituary of his son, Frederick, (displayed at the right) it seems that John Frederick Schmidt, the elder:

> Lived in Waldensburg, Germany

> Married Catherine Jockel

> Fathered his son, Frederick, in 1878

> Immigrated to the United States and Darrtown, Ohio in 1882

54th Wedding Anniversary of Frederick and Louise Schmidt

We are indebted to Donna Laughlin for contributing the following news article.

From the Hamilton Journal News

(a handwritten note on the news clipping read "1955").

"Mr. And Mrs. Fred Schmidt observe 54th anniversary

Monday saw the happy occasion for the family observance of the 54th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schmidt, who for many years resided in Darrtown and who are widely known throughout Milford Township and vicinity.

The Schmidt family came to Darrtown from Waldensberg, Germany, in 1882, and although the Frederick Schmidts later moved to Hamilton, they still maintain property in Darrtown, where Mr. Schmidt's brother, Jacob, made his home, until his death last summer.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt (Louise Sprang) were married on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1901, in the St. Johns Church, of Hamilton. They have two sons, A. Raymond Schmidt, whose wife is principal of Collinsville School, and John Frederick Schmidt, of Middletown; a grandson, Dr. W. Fred Schmidt, and a great-granddaughter, Cheryl Lynn.

Dr. W. Fred Schmidt is now also residing in Hamilton, at 820 Shady Lane, and is serving as a dentist with the U. S. Public Health Service in Cincinnati."

"Four generations are represented in the above photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schmidt, who marked their 54th wedding anniversary this week. Seated are Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt; their granddaughter, Cheryl Lynn; and their son, John Frederick Schmidt; pictured standing is the Schmidt's grandson, Dr. W. Fred Schmidt."

Schmidt Family Christmas - 1964

In late December 2013, Cheryl Neel donated the two following photos of the Schmidt Family that were taken during Christmas, 1964. Cheryl contributed the comments that appear beneath each photo.

Cheryl Neel wrote, "The photo with Frederick Schmidt (Grandpa Schmidt to us) is the last taken of the four generations of Schmidt men. Grandpa died two days later. In the photo (left to right) are myself; my dad, W. Frederick Schmidt; Grandpa Schmidt; my brother, William Frederick Schmidt, Jr.; my sister, Mary Elizabeth Schmidt; Louisa Sprang Schmidt (Grandma Schmidt to us); and my grandfather, John Frederick Schmidt."

In this photo, Cheryl Neel identified individuals from left to right and from back to front. Cheryl explained that this photo "includes, from left to right, 'Uncle Clarence' (no relation, but a good friend of Uncle Raymond. I have no idea what his last name was, but he attended every family gathering); myself; John Frederick Schmidt; Marie (Miller) Schmidt; my sister; Grandpa John's wife, Martha (Apple) Schmidt; [Santa Claus]; A. R. Schmidt (Uncle Raymond); my brother; Louisa (Sprang) Schmidt; and my Grandma Opal, my mother's mother."
