Leon V. Parker, 19, 55th Area Man To Die In Vietnam Fighting
Marine L/Cpl. Leon V. Parker, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bolser, 1500 Hamilton-Richmond Road is Butler County's 55th casualty in Vietnam fighting. He was killed in fighting Saturday, July 5, about 11 miles north of Kat-Khe-Sanh, Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. Cpl. Parker died of fragmentation wounds to his head and body.
His family was notified by the Marine Corps of their son's death, when two Marine personnel visited the family's home, and were officially notified by a telegram from Gen. Leonard F. Chapman, Marine Corps commandant.
Cpl. Parker attended Talawanda High School, where he excelled in art, a subject which he greatly enjoyed and in which he was extremely talented. He left school in his junior year to join the United States Marine Corps May 21, 1967. He had been in Vietnam since August, 1968.
Cpl. Parker had been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Purple Heart, the Sharpshooter medal and several others, while in the service. He was injured and hospitalized before leaving for Vietnam when he inhaled a riot control agent, and was able to visit his parents and family before leaving last August.
Cpl. Parker leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bolser, Hamilton; a half-brother, Sgt. Donald Floyd, a Vietnam veteran who was injured and is now stationed in Cherry Point, N.C.; a step-brother, three sisters; a half-sister; and three step-sisters.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Webb Funeral Home, Ross Ave., at S. "D" St., pending the arrival of Cpl. Parker's body from Vietnam.
