As noted in the following newspaper article, in 1924, the Somerville community, located in the northeastern part of Milford township, had its own high school.
The high school students in the rest of Milford Township (outside the Somerville attendance area) had, for several years prior to 1924, attended classes in Darrtown one year and Collinsville the next.
This alternating arrangement had become unsatisfactory for several reasons, with the major reason being that neither Darrtown nor Collinsville had a school building that met the state requirements for high schools.
Something had to be done. So, a public meeting was held, on Thursday afternoon, February 7, 1924. A reported 100 people attended the session.
There were differing opinions about the best solution. Some people favored sending all Milford Township high schoolers to Somerville, where a high school building existed. Others favored splitting the students by area and sending them to existing high schools in Oxford, Seven Mile, or Somerville. A majority favored building a centralized high school, between Darrtown and Collinsville.
A second meeting was scheduled for further discussion.
Webmaster notes appear below the following news article.
Webmaster notes:
The projected cost of the building had to be daunting to the township residents. According to Google, $80,000 in 1924 translates to $1,204,504 in 2021.
Obviously, the idea of constructing the "centralized" high school "some point between" Darrtown and Collinsville was altered, as the building was constructed on West Oxford Street in Darrtown. If more is learned about the decision to build the high school in Darrtown, it will be shared here.
