Return to Area Schools

This "Somerville Community" page was added to the "Area School" section of the Darrtown website in late November 2020, after the discovery of a YouTube page that is devoted to a collection of movies filmed by Samuel Inman of Somerville, in the 1940's.

Mr. Inman owned and operated the Inman Funeral Home, which was located in Somerville. It is obvious that Mr. Inman possessed a keen eye for capturing scenes on his "motion picture" camera.

Seven decades later, Mr. Inman's grandson, Samuel Markey uploaded the movies to YouTube.

ABOVE: This view of Somerville's Main Street looks north from the intersection where St. Rt. 744 turns east toward Jacksonburg, Ohio. The Somerville Bank building stands at the left.

The movies begin with black and white film; partway through, color film appears.

There is background music, however, there is no narration.

The movies appear to have been shot in the 1940’s.

Footage includes street scenes, town folk, cars, clothing styles, activities, Inman funeral home, cemetery, church, holiday celebrations (including toys children received at Christmas), WW II servicemen in uniform, railroad depot scenes, trains passing in the background, and vacation road trips.

If you can identify any persons, places, or events in the Inman movies, please use the link in the footer of this page to inform the Webmaster.
