FAMILIES V-Z: WEISS ~ Ignaz Weiss

Ignaz "Fritz" Weiss is the Weiss family "pioneer" in Darrtown history.

In 1871, Ignatz Weiss immigrated to the United States from Germany. He settled in Darrtown, where he met and married Louise Kolb. Ignaz was the village blacksmith for 35 years.

The above photograph was provided by Mrs. Albert (Bernice Frances Weiss) Lindley - daughter of William F. Weiss. Bernice identified the persons in the photograph.

Ignaz "Fritz" Weiss died Thursday, January 9, 1919, "nearing his 78th year" (see newspaper obituary below). Thus, his birth year calculates to have been 1842. He was born in Germany and immigrated to the US in 1871; so, it seems he was 29 years old when he arrived in America (see Ellis Island records below).

Louise Kolb immigrated to the US in 1860, with her family, when she was less than one-year old. Louise married Ignaz on April 8, 1880 (see marriage license below). Hence, Louise was about 19-20 years younger than Ignaz.

Ignaz and Louisa had one son, William Frederick Weiss, and two daughters, Carrie and Emma (see image below). For many years "Fritz" Weiss was a blacksmith in Darrtown. He was buried in the Darrtown cemetery.

FYI: Records show different versions of Weiss names...

Was it Ignaz or Ignazt? Was it Louise or Louisa?

And, the name "Weiz" appears on an Ellis Island "passenger" record.

Immigration information:

Frances Margaret Weiss, great-grand-daughter of Ignaz and Louise Weiss, located records from Ellis Island (see images below) that celebrate the immigration of Ignaz and Louisa Weiss into America from Germany.

More immigration information:

Frederick Albert Lindley, great-grandson of Ignaz and Louise Weiss, and his wife, Deborah Kelly Lindley, found the following "Passenger Records," during a trip to Ellis Island on October 10, 2019.

Census information - 1930

Ignaz Weiss died in 1919. The 1930 U.S. Census reports that Ignaz Weiss's widow, Louise (Kolb) Weiss was, in 1930, living with her daughter, Carrie (Weiss) Bowers and son-in-law, Luima Bowers, in the Collinsville, Ohio area - probably on Hueston Road (see name of road in left margin of Census Image 2 below).

The census report is too wide to replicate on this website. Consequently, only portions of the 1930 report are provided in the following three images.

The first image below shows the right side of the report's header, which provides the date of the survey (April 7, 1930) and the name of the enumerator (Dorothy Ledwell - who was a resident of the Collinsville, Ohio area).

The second image below shows the left half of the 1930 report. Notice that "Hueston Road" is written in the left margin, which verifies the residences of the people who are enumerated in this section of the report. Hueston Road runs south from Collinsville, Ohio to the Taylor School Road, in Milford Township, Butler County, Ohio.

The third image below shows the right side of the 1930 report. Notice that line 33, sixth column to the right, reports Louise's birth year to be "1860."

Life events

The following excerpt from the 1880 U.S. Census identifies Fritz Weiss as a blacksmith. As reported in his 1919 obituary (see "Death" section below), Ignaz Weiss was a blacksmith in Darrtown for 35 years and he was in partnership with Fred Abry.

The following image shows the April 8, 1880 marriage license of Mr. Ignas Weiss and Miss Louise Kolb.

The following image is a section of the 1914 map of MIlford Township. As seen below, Ignaz Weiss owned an 84-acre farm, west of Darrtown, on the south side of Schollenbarger Road. The western border of his land abutted the Darrtown cemetery and the southern property line bordered Four Mile Creek.
