FAMILIES Q-U: SCHULTZ ~ Herman Schultz
Herman Schultz
(The following information was provided by Paulette (Schultz) Sloan in mid-October 2009.)
"Herman and Helen (Guiler) Schultz lived in Darrtown, Ohio in the late 1940's to 1960. The Schultz home was located on Walnut Street. It was the last house on Walnut, on the right (east side) going north - before the intersection with North Street. The Schultz's had a large garden every summer and raised raspberries which were sold every year to any resident of Darrtown who desired them. Herman was a Pythias Knight and Helen was a Pythias Sister.
Helen Schultz was the daughter of Jacob and Rose Guiler, also of Darrtown. Jacob and Rose Guiler had five children: three daughters, Helen, Elizabeth, and Louise Guiler and two sons; Eugene and Fred Guiler.
The Jacob and Rose Guiler family lived at several locations in Darrtown - the last residence was located on the west side of Main Street. That property backed up against the Schultz property on Walnut Street. At one time, the Jacob and Rose Guiler family lived on a farm located at the northwest corner of Darrtown. That farm, which Jacob and Rose referred to as the "McKee" farm, was accessible from a lane that ran along the north side the barn that sits on the property owned by Kirk Mee I and II. The lane, from Rt. 177 to the farm buildings, ran west for about 400 yards and then turned north for approximately 200 yards.
Helen (Guiler) Schultz had two brothers, Eugene Guiler of Hamilton and Fred Guiler of Darrtown and two sisters, Elizabeth (Guiler) Krauth of Darrtown and Louise (Guiler) Young of Darrtown.
Herman and Helen Schultz had two daughters; Imogene and Paulette. Both Imogene and Paulette attended Collinsville school through the 6th grade.
Imogene’s class at Collinsville included Janet Baumann, Fay Dees, and Betty Jean Lindley. Imogene went to Seven Mile School for the seventh grade and, upon the consolidation of schools, graduated from Talawanda High School in 1958.
Paulette’s classmates at Collinsville School included Frances Weiss, Barbara Hammel, Frank Menke, and Rita Purcivel. Paulette graduated from Eaton High School in 1966.
Paulette remembers playing with other Darrtown kids in a field that was located on the east side of Walnut Street, between Apple and Oxford streets - across the street from the Methodist Church and the Earl Young and Dick Bufler homes. She characterized that period of her life as “a great time.”
In 1960, daughter, Imogene Schultz married. That same year, Herman, Helen, and Paulette Schultz moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana - where Herman and Helen’s marriage ended.
Herman Schultz stayed in Ft. Wayne remarried and had one more child. Herman Schultz died in 1997.
Helen and Paulette Schultz returned to Oxford, Ohio, where Helen remarried. She married George Wilkerson and one child resulted from that marriage. George and Helen (Schultz) Wilkerson lived in Eaton, Ohio, until Helen’s death in 1967.
Imogene Schultz married Carl Shafer in 1960 at the Darrtown Methodist Church. Imogene and Carl had three children: Virginia Marie Shafer, Carlena Kay Shafer, and Rex Andrew Shafer. Imogene now has four great grandchildren.
Paulette Schultz married twice; she and her second husband, Willie Sloane married in 1969. That marriage resulted in two children: Antonia Marie Sloan and William Andrew Sloan. Willie and Paulette Sloan have six grandchildren."
