A county marriage record shows that Louis J. Schuck married Carrie Huth on April 23, 1889, in Butler County, Ohio.

An 1870 census report shows Lewis, at age five, living in Hamilton, Ohio, with his parents, Jacob and Helen Shuck, and a sister, Josephine, age two.

An 1888, Hamilton (Ohio) City Directory lists Louis J. Schuck as a resident at 412 South Front S. and his occupation was listed as "bakery."

Family Search records show Lewis and Carrie living in Somerville, Ohio in 1900; so it seems they lived in Somerville, before moving to Darrtown.

An 1893, Hamilton, Ohio news item reported a fire in the top of a wagon used by "huckster," Lewis Schuck.

The first evidence of a Schuck family member living in Darrtown or vicinity is provided by the 1900 Milford Township federal census. Lewis J. Schuck and his wife, Carrie, are listed on a page with other people known to have lived in Darrtown.

The illness of Jacob Schuck (father of Lewis Schuck) was reported in the 1901 Darrtown news. PERHAPS, Mr. Schuck was living with Lewis and Carrie in Darrtown.

In July of 1902, a Darrtown news item told of an injury to L. J. Schuck, while attempting to "get up on a mule."

In August of 1902, Darrtown news reported an outing by Mrs. Schuck and Mrs. Popst.

Records confirm that the following events occurred in the lives of Lewis and Carrie (Huth) Schuck, PRIOR TO their arrival in Darrtown, in 1900.

A 1916 Hamilton, Ohio newspaper item listed Louis Schuck "of Darrtown" as a member of a petit jury.

CONNECTING THE SCHUCK FAMILY TO DARRTOWN

The connection between Darrtown and the Shuck family begins in 1900, according to the documented facts (posted below) and a few assumptions (also posted below),

A 1911 news item reported the death of Carrie Schuck. She was buried in the pioneer section of the Darrtown cemetery.

An April 16, 1914 Hamilton newspaper told that L. J. Schuck was visited, for a week, by Mrs. Jacob Schuck and Miss Annie Wendell.

The 1910 federal census report included the names of Lewis and Carrie Schuck ... AND their Darrtown neighbors.

For 13 years (1907-1920), Louis Schuck served as the treasurer of the Darrtown Stock Protection Company.

ASSUMPTIONS AND/OR OBSERVATIONS:

1. The April 17, 1914 newspaper heading (see link below, left) carries a date of 1941. Presumably, the numerals "14" were transposed to read "41," during the electronic reproduction of the article. The marriage could not have occurred in 1941, as Lewis Schuck died in 1920.

2. The 1926 newspaper article that announces the death of Mrs. Lewis Schuck,  identifies her as "Hannah." Presumably, the name Anna, as applied to Mrs. Lewis Schuck, was a shortened version of the name Hannah.

3. The 1926 death notice of Mrs. Hannah Schuck includes conflicting information; i.e. - in this news article, Hannah's birth year is reported as 1874, whereas the 1920 census reports 1888, as Anna Shuck's birth year.

More research may clarify these issues.

This link leads to a 1932 news item that reports the occasion when members of Darrtown's K. of P. lodge commemorated the graves of several deceased members - including that of Mr. L. G. Shuck.

Darrtown news in 1921 reported that Mrs. Anna Schuck was "improving the appearance of her store."

The assumptions and/or observations posted at the right are offered about the ITEMS DISPLAYED BELOW - which relate to the marriage and lives of Lewis and Anna Schuck, after 1914.

Jack was the brother of Anna Wendel, who married Lewis Shuck, the owner of Shuck's Grocery. In the 1920 news paper clipping (above) Jack Wendel was identified as the manager of Shuck's Corner.

RIGHT: Jack Wendel is also mentioned in this 1924 newspaper advertisement.
