(BELOW AND RIGHT: The three Mee siblings, children of Kirk Mee II and Bette (Mahaffey) Mee, grew up in Darrtown during the middle of the 20th century. They included, (in birth order): Kirk Mee III, Linda Mee, and Cynthia Mee.

Kirk Mee III:

Born March 5, 1939 in Oxford, Ohio, Darrtown native, Kirk Mee III attended McGuffey High School (Oxford, Ohio) for three years, until it was consolidated into the Talawanda High School.

As a 1957 Talawanda graduate, Kirk was recognized as an all-around athlete, garnering honors as Male Athlete of the Year in 1956 and 1957. He lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track.  

Kirk attended Wilmington College (Wilmington, Ohio) where he graduated cum laude, while lettering in football, basketball, and baseball. After college, KIrk became a football coach at the collegiate and professional level (see details below). Kirk also served as a motivational speaker.

Kirk coached football at Defiance College (Ohio) and won the Mid-Ohio League Championship in 1966. He was named NAIA Ohio Coach of the year after a 9-0 record. Defiance went on the post the nation's longest winning streak.

     •     In 1967, Mee became Assistant coach at University of Wisconsin.

     •     In 1970, Mee joined the Washington Redskins as Personnel Talent Scout.

     •     In 1971 and 1972, Kirk coached the Earlham College to winning seasons.

     •     In 1974, Kirk rejoined the Washington Redskins, as a linebacker coach for George Allen.

     •     Under Jack Pardee in 1978, he coached the receivers, tight ends, and special teams.

     •     In 1981, under Joe Gibbs, Kirk was named Director of Pro Player Personnel and then became Director of Player Personnel with head coach Norv Turner.

1982: Kirk became a member of the Defiance College (Ohio) Hall of Fame. Members of the 1982 class included: Mr. Martin A. Baumhower '63 / Mr. Blaine P. Dowler '43 / Mr. Obed H. May '20 / and Mr. Kirk Mee, III (Coach)

1991: The Wilmington College (Ohio) Hall of Fame welcomed Kirk into its membership with the following citation:

     "The purpose of the Wilmington College Athletics Hall of Fame is to extend recognition to those persons who have           contributed to the honor and fame of Wilmington College through their efforts in the field of intercollegiate athletics           and who have continued to demonstrate in their lives those values learned through their participation."

2000: Kirk was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.

2001: Kirk Mee was inducted into the Talawanda High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The following narrative (and the image above) accompanied Kirk's induction:

"Kirk Mee attended McGuffey High School for three years, where he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and      track. He enrolled at Talawanda High School when the school opened in the fall of 1956, where he was promptly elected co-captain of the school’s first football team. He kicked the extra point that brought the new high school its first win in any sports competition. He was a two way starter for this football team that won Talawanda its first league championship. He was a first team All League selection in football. Kirk also played basketball, baseball and ran track that first year at Talawanda and was selected as the outstanding athlete of his class.

Upon graduation from Talawanda, Kirk enrolled at Wilmington College where he participated in football, baseball and      track. He was an All League selection in football, and was picked as the most valuable Wilmington player in both football and baseball. He is a member of the Wilmington College Athletic Hall of Fame.     

At age 23, Kirk was named head football coach at Defiance College, making him the youngest head college coach in the nation. Kirk had an outstanding career at Defiance College, including an undefeated, un-tied team in 1966. For this accomplishment, he was named Small College Coach of the Year.

After several years as an assistant football coach at the University of Wisconsin, Kirk was appointed by the legendary Vince Lombardi to the staff of the Washington Redskins professional football team. There, he served twenty-four years under Lombardi, George Allen, Joe Gibbs, Jack Pardee and Norv Turner as an assistant coach and Director of Player Personnel. Kirk has three Super Bowl rings to show for his efforts with the Redskins.

Now retired, Kirk is a motivational speaker as well as a member of the Defiance College Athletic Hall of Fame, the Butler County Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Indiana Athletic Hall of Fame."

Kirk Mee III Activities

In 2009, Kirk participated in the promotion of football in Serbia. The image at the right shows some of the persons who participated in the 2009 Serbian football promotion. Kirk is seen sitting at the left side of the table in front.

The past couple of days I had the unique pleasure of hanging out with an ex-NCAA coach, ex-NFL player, and ex-NFL coach with 3 Super Bowl rings. These three visitors, Larry Kentera (ASU Def. Coordinator 1974-1979; NAU Head Coach 1985-1990). Gene Felker (Univ. of Wisconsin, Green Bay Packers 1952), and Kirk Mee (Univ. of Wisconsin, Washington Redskins for 25 years & 3 Super Bowls) have been traveling around Serbia for the past week checking the progress of American football in the country."

In 2009, Kirk sponsored the 13th annual Wilmington College / Kirk Mee Celebrity Golf Tournament at Snow Hill Country Club in New Vienna, Ohio.

Cynthia Mee:

Prior to earning her doctorate at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Cynthia Mee earned her undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University and two master’s degrees at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. While attending Miami University, Cynthia was a Teaching Fellow, taught classes and became an Academic Advisor.

Following a teaching career that started as a high school teacher in Ohio and then a preschool-middle level educator in New York City, Cynthia became a university professor - teaching at the University Wisconsin Platteville for a few years.  She moved to Chicago, IL where she became a faculty member at National Louis University, until her retirement. While there, she was the chair of the Middle Level Education Program, Program Coordinator Middle Level of the Education Program, Director of the Middle Level Curriculum and Instruction Center, and SPA Reader and Appeals Board Member for the professional organization, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and has been honored with a few academic awards during her career.

Dr. Mee authored the book "Young Adolescents' Perceptions and Curricular Implications" (National Middle School Association, 1997, four editions), and also authored hundreds of articles for various professional journals and chapters in other books. For several years, she was the editor of an Illinois state professional newsletter, gave hundreds of presentations at local, regional, state, and national conferences, and was a consultant to various middle schools in a few different states. Her areas of concentrations and specialties included young adolescent development, equity issues in middle schools, the impact of media on young adolescents’ development, popular culture literacies of young adolescents, electromagnetic radiation safety in home and schools, and educational experiences of Japanese American children, while living in concentration camps during WWII.

Cynthia was a co-owner of the L&S Art Gallery in Evanston, IL and has been a minister’s assistant at the Midwest Buddhist Temple in Chicago, for several years.
