HOW THE CLEMENTS FAMILY PAGE EVOLVED

Prior to mid-August 2021, persons associated with this website were unaware of any connection between Darrtown and the Clements family.

Then, some happenstance research led to the discovery of an 1890 death notice (shown at the right) for a Mrs. Clements who was reported as "an old resident of Darrtown."

Clements Family History Sought

Further research, at Ancestry.com, led to the discovery of a Clements family tree - part of which is reproduced below.

The Clements family tree image (above) shows that the Mrs. Clements, who died in 1890, was the mother of Mrs. John Wells Nichols. The 1890 death notice (shown above the family tree image) erroneously identifies Mrs. Nichols as being a sister. Thus, it is established that Mrs. Clements (1822-1890) died at THE HOME OF HER DAUGHTER - NOT HER SISTER.

RIGHT: This reproduction of the obituary for Mrs. Catherine Clements corrects the error that appeared in the death notice above.

This obituary correctly reports that Mrs. Clements was the mother of Mrs. Wells Nichols.

It also lists her husband as "J. G. Clements" - which agrees with the information that is provided by the image of the Clements family tree above.

Obituary of Maria B. (Clements) Nichols

The following 1860 census shows James Clements and Caroline Clements as the parents of M.E. (Mary), John, Helen, Mariah, and Caroline - five children, ranging in ages from 12 years to nine months. Note that James is listed as a "grocery - keeper."

1880

The following 1880 census is significant because the Occupation block reports that James was a "Grocer" and "PM." Census takers in this period of time often used "PM" to indicate "Post Master." James Clements' name appears on a list of Darrtown postmasters.

1900

By the time that the 1900 federal census was taken, John W. Nichols and Maria (Clements) Nichols had been married 19 (going on 20) years. Two boarders (ages 36 and 17) were reported living with them. The absence of any children is confirmed in Maria's obituary, in which it reported that Maria, who died in 1930, was "the last surviving member of her father's family..." Her husband, John Wells Nichols died, eight years previous, in 1922.

1920

FEDERAL CENSUS REPORTS

At the start of the decade that would become known as "The Roaring Twenties," John and Maria Nichols had two of Maria's family living with them; Mary (Clements) Hash, Maria's older sister, and William Clements, Maria's younger brother. Mary was a widow and William was a widower.

Within three years, of this 1920 census report, Maria was the lone survivor. Sister, Mary died in 1920; husband, John, died in 1922; and brother, William, died in 1923. As noted in her obituary, below, Maria, lived until Tuesday, June 3, 1930.
