FAMILIES A-C: BROOKS ~ Lester Brooks
Brooks, Lester and Audrey
Lester, Audrey, and their four children lived at 4224 Hamilton-Richmond Road. Located on the east side of the road, their house was the second dwelling north of the intersection of Hamilton-Richmond Road and Scott Road to the east and Darrtown Road to the west.
(The Stanley Matthews family lived across the street from the Brooks family. Sometime after the Brooks family left Darrtown, the Matthews purchased and occupied the house at 4224 Hamilton-Richmond Road.)
In 1950, the Brooks family moved from Darrtown to a farm in Indiana - where they resided until they moved to Hamilton, Ohio in 1954. While living in Hamilton, the Brooks family maintained a Darrtown connection; the family members attended the Darrtown Methodist church; Lester and Audrey were active in the Darrtown Knights of Pythias lodge, and they had many friends in and around Darrtown. As noted below, Lester and Audrey moved back to Darrtown in 1979.
The Brooks family history seen at the left was contributed by Phyllis (Brooks) Flick in July 2010. Phyllis is a daughter of Lester and Audrey Brooks and sister of Linda, William, and Penelope (Penny) Brooks.
According to Phyllis, the Brooks family of four (Lester, Audrey, Linda, and Bill) moved to Darrtown in 1944; the family increased to six, as Penelope and Phyllis were born while the family lived in Darrtown.
Phyllis Brooks originally contacted the Darrtown website to help identify a woman who appears in a Nelle Davis photo. July 25, 2010. On July 25, 2010, Phyllis wrote:
"In the photo of the group of ladies celebrating Nell Davis' 95th birthday, I believe the unidentified woman standing behind Audrey Brooks and Myrtle Jewell is Bea Robbins."
A few days later, Phyllis added the following information:
"Bea Robbins was a sister to Bill Hamilton.... if you remember, Bill’s wife, Delta and daughter, Billie, were killed in a tragic auto accident while they were on vacation sometime in the late '50's or early '60's. I think that Billie, the daughter, was the same age as my sister, Penelope (Penny).
Bea and Jim moved to Darrtown after the accident to be closer to Bill and his other daughter, Donna. I'm not sure where they lived when they first moved to Darrtown, but later they lived in the brick house next to the Methodist Church.
My folks became friends with them and they socialized quite a lot, traveling together, playing cards, etc. Bea and Jim are buried in the Darrtown cemetery, near Mom and Dad. The Robbins and my parents used to joke that they were going to set up a card table between their headstones.
Mom and Dad had moved back to Darrtown (3027 Scott Rd.) in 1979. Dad died in January 1996. In 2000, Mom moved to Westover Retirement Community. She lived in independent living there until August of 2009, when she fell and broke her arm. Then she entered healthcare and steadily declined. She passed on March 28th of this year (2010).
As for my siblings and me - since our Darrtown years: Bill has retired and lives in Arizona. They are in the process of moving into a home in Paulden, near Prescott. They had been living in Phoenix, until this summer."
