The Lemmons - Richardson Families

Written by Deanna (Lemmons) Richardson

January - 2015

In the summer of 1954, Robert and Ida Mae (Eiler) Lemmons and

children Deanna, Stevan, Carolyn, & Ruthanne Lemmons settled in

Darrtown. We lived in the house across from the KP hall. I was thirteen

years old at the time and would be going into jr. high school at Stewart in

the fall. Mother worked at the Pillsbury Company and Daddy worked in

a machine shop in Hamilton, OH.

Darrtown was a small community. We knew most of the people living there and many people were related to one another. We enjoyed our grandparents, John and Elma Lemmons and great grandma, Abigail Agnew, who lived just down the street.

In the summer time, there was swimming at the pool with friends. In the

evenings, siblings and friends would go bike riding, play "kick the can,"

have camp fires in the back yard, and do camp outs, on our front bricked

porch. Saturday nights, we would enjoy the music and dancing at the KP

Hall. Sometimes, we would dance outdoors on the concrete. There would

be square dancing, occasionally.

I was a member of a 4-H sewing club. Our projects would be judged and exhibited at the Butler County Fair. We attended church, Sunday school, Youth Fellowship, and choir.

Agusta Guiler was the choir director.

In the fall, back to school we would go. We would be busy with studies and activities. In Darrtown, we all looked forward to Halloween parties and some trick or treating. When

the snowy weather would come along and school would be called off, many would dress up warm, grab sleds and off to the hill, which was then the Bob Bowman's farm. It is situated on Schollenbarger road, in the curve across from the cemetery. Making snow ice cream was often enjoyed, as well as walks in the snow to and from choir practice singing

winter songs.

At Christmas time, the choir would go caroling. Maria and Nell Davis were included (they lived where the Presidio Pines Bread and Breakfast is). Oh my, then there was the annual Christmas party held at the Hitching Post and hosted by Red Huber, who was owner and operator, which was enjoyed by all ages. Lots of fun and memories.

In 1958, Robert and Ida Mae (Eiler) Lemmons and family moved to 3150 South Street (corner of West St and Darrtown Rd). I would now be attending Talawanda High School, which was the consolidation of Stewart, McGuffey, and Hanover high schools. Going to an Oxford school would cause many activities to be in Oxford, however we still

made time to enjoy our Darrtown friends and we would pleasure ourselves in doing what we could according to the weather and the season. Darrtown was a great town with wonderful people and a great atmosphere.

June of l959 I graduated from Talawanda High School.

July 1, 1959, I became employed at Miami University in the Administration Building(which is now Rhodebush hall) in the accounting office.

In July of 1960, I became engaged to Larry Richardson whom I had been

dating since our junior year in high school. He lived at 2680 Harris Rd.,

which is located in Milford Twp. We were married on November 5, 1960

at St. Mary Church in Oxford, OH.

Larry's parents were Lawrence and Stella (Howe) Richardson. Larry

was one of seven children. Paul, Earl, and LaVerna were married when

the Richardson's moved to Harris Rd. Larry, Kenny, Harold, & Mary

Ellen were still at home. They moved to Harris Rd. in 1951, which made

Larry ten at the time. He attended Collinsville grade school, then Seven Mile

school for his seventh grade. They could choose to go to Seven Mile or

an Oxford school at the time. When he was to go into the eighth grade

they were not able to make that choice. They were required to attend an

Oxford school. Larry chose to attend Stewart. I did not know Larry until

we were in the junior class at Talawanda and that was when we started dating.

Larry's parents are deceased and so are his brothers Paul and Kenny. His youngest brother Harold, whom he helps with crops, resides in Milford Twp. at 5290

Hamilton-Richmond Rd. Harold is married to Cathy Kirkpatrick who was a

grandaughter to the Kramers, who were owners and farmed this property.

Harold and Cathy have three daughters Karen, Amy and Lora. Lora and her

children reside in Milford twp. at 4735 Hamilton Richmond Rd. The

house they are in is the house that Pat Smith had built, when she left the

farm north of 73 and 177 intersection.
