In July of 1917, an auxiliary of the American Red Cross was organized in Darrtown - according to a 1917 newspaper article.

The news story does not explain why the group was formed; however, the timing of the event suggests that it MAY have been motivated by the announcement three months earlier (April 6, 1917), when the U. S. Congress voted to declare war against Germany. Congress acted after several American merchant ships were destroyed by German torpedoes.
