FAMILIES A-C: BOWMAN ~ George W. Bowman
In 2012, Kay Weiss, a descendant of the Bowman-Weiss family, engaged in an email exchange with the webmaster that contributed to the Bowman family genealogy.
The emails are replicated below, in the belief that they help clarify the story of the Bowman family of Darrtown.

Hello, Fred --
Thanks for continuing to work on this site.
My late father-in-law, Joe Weiss, and his sister, Louise, were raised in the Darrtown area after their mother Josephina Detling Weiss married George Washington Bowman (1872-1931). This George W. Bowman and his sister, Lizella (who married George Franklin Bufler) were two of the children of another George Washington Bowman (1836-1908) and his wife Lucy Yeakle.
Two photos are attached:
The Darrtown Cornet Band -- the only identification I have: "Grandpa" (George Washington Bowman, 1836-1908) at the bass drum; "Dad" (George Washington Bowman, 1872-1931) with the snare drum.
The family group photo -- identification, back row, left to right: Henry Bindheimer (step-dad to Josephina Bowman), Charley Davis, Joe Dunwoody, George Bowman (1872-1931), "Mom" (Josephina Detling Weiss Bowman), Frank Bufler; second row, left to right: Kate Davis, Louise Weiss Dunwoody, Addie Bufler; front: Robert "Bob" Dunwoody, Walter "Pete" Dunwoody. (Based on the boys' looks, I would say this photo was taken around 1922.)
I hope you can use these photos.
Sincerely,
Kay Weiss

Kay,
Thank you, thank you...for the images and information.
I would have responded more promptly; however, we were out of town for a few days last week [when your note arrived] and then when we returned home last Friday, a wind storm knocked out our electrical power for nearly four days!
I really appreciate the contributions that you have made to the Darrtown website!
Please stay in touch.

Hello, Fred --
You are most welcome. David died in October, 2010, and I have been trying to get some of his families' information to the right places. Every time I come to Darrtown, I think of all the memories there. (His mother was a Shollenbarger -- descended from the Shollenbargers of that same area.) I hope the photos will be useful to the site and the bicentennial.

Subject: Question about Weiss family
Kay,
I am using the info that you provided to create a Bowman/Weiss branch of the Darrtown family tree.
Please clarify one question; if George Washington Bowman and Josephina Detling Weiss had two children [Joe and Louise], wouldn’t their last names be Bowman?
Thanks in advance,
Fred

Hello, Fred --
Louise and Joe were the children of Joseph George Weiss and Josephina Detling (whose second husband was George Washington Bowman [1872-1931]). Louise and Joe never used the Bowman name and were never adopted by their step-dad, who was always called "Dad Bowman" by the two of them, when they spoke of him. They were very fond of him Their half-brother, George Bowman, is also deceased and buried in the Darrtown cemetery (as are all, but J. G. Weiss).
Since it was a very confusing family situation, I appreciate the fact that you are checking with me before you put things "out there" on the web. Particularly in this situation, accuracy is extremely important. If I can clarify anything else, please let me know.
Another Darrtown connection: Joe Weiss' wife, Helen, was a Shollenbarger. Her great-grandparents [Daniel and Elizabeth] were among the founders of the Lutheran church in Darrtown [now St. Matthew].
Thanks for checking with me.

Kay,
So, just to be absolutely clear; Detling was the maiden name of Josephina Weiss. Right?
At some point, Josephina married Joseph George Weiss and had two children [Joe and Louise]. Right, again?
Then, Josephina later married George Washington Bowman [1872-1931], who became the step-father (“Dad Bowman”) to Joe and Loulse. Right for a third time?

Hello, again!
Yes, you've got it right.
Josephina Detling (her maiden name) married first, Joseph George Weiss; two children from that marriage were Louise Weiss and Joseph Elmer Weiss. She later married George Washington Bowman (1872-1931) and had another son, George Bowman (called "Brother George" by the two other children).
Thanks for working on this Darrtown project. It has been fun for me to watch your progress from afar.
